Rituals of Punjabi and Sikh Wedding

Although the Punjabi Wedding is quite a simple ceremony held in Gurdwara, the rituals associated with it are truly engaging. In fact, the rituals themselves make the wedding ceremony this special and interesting. A Punjabi or Sikh wedding ceremony starts from the Shagun (engagement) itself. Apart from the religious traditions, the Shagun ceremony specially attracts attention due to the exchange of gifts between two families. The gifts are considered auspicious, which are often showered as blessing to the bride-to-be for her nupital journey. The bride’s family also sends a “Thaali” graced with sweets, silks, and riches to the groom's family as a part of the auspicious ceremony.

The choora or the bangle ceremony is an important pre wedding ritual. Traditionally, the bride’s maternal uncle embellishes the bride’s wrist with white and red bangles and a special ornament known as Kalirein. It is made of gold or silver and is supposed to pass on from generation to generation.

Gharoli , observed in the morning of the wedding day is essentially a function performed by the groom’s family. The ritual itself is extremely graceful, with groom and his family going to Gurdwara in order to fill the earthier pitcher (Gharoli) with water. This water is considered auspicious and is used for bathing on the wedding day. It is followed by the milni ceremony, in which the groom's sisters fasten a sehera (floral veil) around his forehead. Garland of currency notes is also graced around his neck. Following this, the groom's procession, popularly called baraat gears up for the wedding venue.

All the auspicios Punjabi wedding rituals are organized in the Gurdwara, although many people prefer organizing these at home.

Needless to say , Punjabi Weddings are one of their kinds, which are more enriched than any other communities in India. Malabar Gold and Diamonds, proudly caters to the diverse needs of the Punjabi Wedding.
